About
Trees of the Field
History Trees of the Field started a few years ago. I was sitting in church listening to a sermon that covered the story of the tower of Babel. Somehow the idea popped into my head that if God had needed a back-up plan he could have simply started tossing people out into the world in all directions. I sketched the idea out on the back of the bulletin. When I showed it to a few friends, they thought it was quite funny and encouraged me to draw more. I regarded the idea as a one-off and did not draw any more Bible based cartoons for awhile. The ideas for cartoons however, persisted. I would be reading my Bible, or simply thinking of a story from the Bible and ideas for cartoons would just come to me. I began drawing them up, but, not having any real intention for them, I just stored them away. Eventually I entered a selection of comics in an art show at my former church, Highland Community Church (www.highlandcommunitychurch.blogspot.com/). Quite a few people expressed an interest in them, and encouraged me to continue drawing and showing them to people. Finally,
after much encouragement from friends and family, I decided to try
getting them published. The results that I received were very
enthusiastic. TOTF as yet can only be found on a few websites and blogs that
post Christian comics and cartoons, and in a couple of Christian
newspapers, but I am hopeful that there is a
bright future for this little comic strip of mine.
InspirationPeople often ask me where I get the inspiration from to draw these comics. There are many, many different answers. I believe that the inspiration for all of these comics comes from God, and I am thankful that he blessed me with just enough drawing talent to turn that inspiration into comics. I feel as though God has called me to draw, I’m just not quite sure where this is all leading, but he does lead me to find inspiration in many different ways. Some comics are basically just an illustration of a Bible verse, there are some really funny verses in the Bible. Some comics are just silly ideas that have been inspired by Bible stories i.e. crossing the Red Sea, Noah and the flood, the tower of Babel etc. Some comics don’t feel very inspired at all. Some comics require a lot of work to write. I will know that there is something funny that can be written about a certain Bible story but it takes many, many drafts to finally get it right. Those comics are maybe the most rewarding. I feel like they are the hardest earned. |
